Improving mobility for people with dementia in long-term care facilities
Physical mobility resources are among the most important factors influencing the maintenance of independent living, especially for people with dementia. Although initial programmes to promote physical activity and mobility skills exist in the inpatient setting, their implementation in everyday professional care has been insufficient so far. This situation applies to both Switzerland and the rest of the world. There is a lack of customisable evaluation tools and recommendations for best practices in this setting.
This project serves to develop a guideline and make it available internationally. It describes the scientific findings and interventions for improving mobility for people with dementia in an inpatient setting. Recommendations for good practices and evaluation tools for caregivers are developed on this basis. Building on the content of the guidelines, a complex intervention that combines these examples of best practices will be developed for the setting of dementia-specific long-term care. This intervention will then be pilot-tested in accordance with the Medical Research Council (MRC) framework model. This is intended to form the basis for a broadly based impact study and further implementation in nursing-relevant institutions.
